Introduction 

Viviane Health’s journey started at the University of Nigeria in 2017, where two of our cofounders, Ikechukwu Vincent Unegbu and Chukwuma Nwachukwu, were students of Physics and Astronomy. Ikechukwu was very sick at the time. On consistent visits to the university medical centre, he had to wait over 10 minutes for his medical files to be located on a giant shelf of dusty files. That was the beginning.

There, he realised the part where patients wait while the receptionist looks for the file has to be cut out. Digitisation is the way forward.

Years earlier in high school, Ikechukwu had also lost a schoolmate who was the only child of her parents. She had a chronic medical condition that resurfaced while she was on holiday, and while receiving care from a different medical team, she sadly passed away. 

Processing all of these, Ikechukwu realised that digitisation was not enough; there was a need for interoperability between medical software used by different facilities.

This realisation led to research on healthcare technology and legacy products where the global problem of fragmentation - one hospital can rely on multiple software vendors, and these software do not integrate or interact with each other, resulting in duplicated patient records, manual paperwork, delayed decisions, revenue leakage, poor reporting, etc.

These observed needs for digitisation required a comprehensive integrated software suite, and interoperability became the vision driving Viviane Health Technologies.

Ikechukwu and Chukwuma would later bring on board a meticulous medical doctor, Chinenye Princess Ezeokolo, as the Medical cofounder.

This problem is not unique to hospitals; many pharmacies use one inventory system or another, but it is not integrated into their websites.

The same can be said about laboratories; there is a predominance of LIS over LIMS.

Why Existing Solutions Were Not Enough

Some systems were legacy platforms built for a different era of healthcare delivery. While they solved important problems at the time, many struggled to adapt to modern expectations around interoperability, cloud infrastructure, patient engagement, analytics, and integrated operations.

We also observed that many foreign solutions were often too expensive for growing healthcare institutions, especially when licensing, deployment, hardware requirements, customisation, and long-term support costs were considered. In many cases, hospitals ended up paying heavily for systems that still required multiple additional tools to fill operational gaps.

Another challenge was localisation. Healthcare operations differ across countries and regions, not only in regulation, but also in workflows, infrastructure realities, payment structures, staffing patterns, and patient behaviour. Systems designed without these considerations often prove difficult to operationalise, regardless of their technical quality.

Most importantly, many systems were designed primarily from a software perspective rather than from a deep understanding of healthcare environments themselves. Healthcare facilities are highly collaborative ecosystems that involve doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, radiologists, administrators, accountants, and patients, all interacting continuously. Technology should make these interactions smoother, not more fragmented.

These observations shaped our thinking significantly. We believed healthcare technology needed to evolve beyond standalone applications into connected infrastructure designed around real operational workflows, interoperability, scalability, and continuity of care.

The Vision

The vision behind Viviane Health Technologies is to build a Healthcare Operating System, a unified ecosystem of integrated medical and business infrastructure designed to help healthcare facilities operate more efficiently, collaboratively, and digitally.

In pursuit of this vision, we are building a comprehensive suite of interconnected healthcare solutions including HMS/EHR, Telemedicine, LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System), RIS (Radiology Information System), Inventory Management, Pharmware (ePrescription and Pharmacy Management), Patient Portal, Clinical Decision Support Systems, Website Builder, Billing and Operations, Accounting, and Clinic Management Systems for smaller specialised facilities.

However, our vision extends beyond simply providing multiple healthcare applications under one company.

More importantly, the patient experience itself should be connected. A patient’s journey through healthcare should not feel fragmented across departments, facilities, or digital platforms. Healthcare systems should be designed to support continuity of care, seamless communication, and long-term accessibility of medical information.

This long-term vision is what continues to shape what we are building toward.

Viviane Health Technologies was founded with a clear vision to address three critical needs in modern healthcare: digitisation, a fully integrated healthcare software ecosystem, what we describe as a Healthcare Operating System, and the acceleration of medical interoperability.

While many parts of Africa are still addressing fundamental digitisation challenges, the problems of fragmented healthcare systems and weak interoperability are global issues affecting healthcare institutions everywhere.

This is why, although we are starting from the African market, the infrastructure and solutions we are building are designed with a global vision from day one.

A patient may book appointments on one platform, run laboratory tests in another facility, purchase medication elsewhere, repeat medical history multiple times, carry physical documents between hospitals, and still end up with disconnected medical records across different systems.

We envision a future where a patient’s healthcare journey is connected seamlessly across consultations, laboratory investigations, radiology, pharmacy, billing, admissions, telemedicine, follow-up care, and even interactions across multiple healthcare facilities. This vision goes beyond simply digitising records. It is about building infrastructure that allows continuity of care.

Patients expect easier access to care, digital communication, online bookings, remote consultations, digital prescriptions, integrated payments, and access to their health information. Healthcare infrastructure must evolve to securely and reliably support these expectations.
